Shoei RF-1000 Helmet

This Shoe RF-100 Review is not for anyone who’s got a $50 head, these lids aren’t cheap. Are they worth the money though?
It’s a fact that the vast majority of motorcyclists only own one lid so why not make sure it’s the best fitting, highest quality and best bang-for-the-buck helmet available?

Top Notch Features

Shoei have designed the RF-100 series to include as many top-notch features as possible into a single package. Sometimes that approach can lead to a ‘Jack of all trades but master of none’ product – not with the RF-1000 though. The package is an excellent one and gives a great daily use helmet.
The RF-1000 is the latest upgrade with many improvements on the most popular Shoei helmet models of all time, the RF-series.
Shoei states that the improvements are the results of many hours of research and development in the wind tunnel and CAD. The RF-1000 is a fundamental rework of the RF-900, and it sports:

  • an aerodynamic shape using their AIM+ helmet shell technology;
  • the Shoei CX-1V face shield with their Quick Release Base Plate system that allows fast and easy visor changes;
  • a new ventilation system;
  • the addition of Shoei’s “3D” helmet liner with removable cheek pads to allow a custom fit if necessary.
  • a claimed 24% reduction in drag and a 17.8% reduction in lift

The helmet has a subtle shape and the wind tunnel work isn’t obvious at first glance, but running your fingers over the top of the helmet reveals a subtle, smooth blending together of gentle curves.

The RF-1000 is both DOT and Snell approved in the U.S.A., and ECE 22.05 and ACU Gold approved in Europe. Size XL weighs in at 1610 grams (3 lbs., 8-3/4 oz.), which is a touch lighter than Shoei’s X-Eleven of the same size.

The new shape really seems to work very well keeping the higher frequency ‘top-of-the-helmet’ and preventing the intrusion of the lower frequency noises by including two wide flaps on wither side of the chin straps.
Like all good design, the RF-1000 venting system is simple – but very effective. The chin vent de-fogs the visor effectively by directing a large volume of incoming air upwards onto the back of the visor. The brow vents are concealed behind slides. The spoiler helps direct air off the back of the helmet to prevent buffeting, while also creating negative pressure to pull air through the helmet.

The approach of continuous improvement that Shoei has taken on RF-series of helmets has paid off for them and made it one of the top selling lids in the world. That’s no happy coincidence either, the RF-1000 does just about everything you want it to do and does those things very well.

The hallmarks of RF design have always been comfort, quietness and Quality. The RF-1000 carries those qualities to the next level and brings class-leading aerodynamics, and state-of-the-art ventilation to the mix.

Add to that the extra features normally only found on the most expensive and exclusive race helmets; the quick release visor system, adjustable lever for visor opening, AIM+ shell etc. and you can see that you get an awful lot of helmet for your money.

It’s definitely not a $50 lid … but then you haven’t got a $50 head.
