Buying a train horn is a bit like buying a tie – you just don't go out and buy any tie do you? Of course not. It has to suit you. Well the same applies to most car accessories, like rims, ornaments and such. The same also applies to train horns. With its increasing popularity, train air horn kits have become in hot demand. With the demand is the sparked increased in web sites and vendors offering various train horn products. You should take your time to become familiar with what's out there, with your own particular needs (what will suit your vehicle), what will suit your budget, and what won't be too much of a headache to install and maintain.
First, you should spend some time at a car shop with a mechanic who knows something about train horns, or maybe even get an estimate on getting one installed. I find that every time I want to install something in my home or redo a room, I bring in knowledgeable contractors to get a quote from. While they are giving me a quote, they typically impart a lot of wisdom that I can learn from. Same goes with any other item you don't know much about. You can easily seek out an expert and get a quote, and ask your questions, before you decide whether you want to have it professionally installed, or whether you want to install it yourself.
If you decide to install it yourself, and you've never done this before, I would highly recommend you buy a kit in order to minimize the “what can go wrong, will go wrong” factor. You know how that is – you decide to install a pond and you buy the wrong liner, or the wrong pump, or the wrong lights, etc, etc. There's just a number of things we don't foresee (never haven't done certain things before) that will creep up and bite you in the behind if you're not careful. So finding a good kit is essential. I'd recommend a moderately priced kit as they not only have a good amount of power (most train horns have way more power than you'll ever need anyway) and a nice look to them, without being too skimpy.
Marc enjoys using train air horn kits on his car and selling train horns for trucks over the internet through his website.
