When we buy a new car, whether it is fresh off the production line or from a shiny showroom, we expect the car to work properly. Small problems may develop over time as the car ages, but in general if our cars run like they should do then we should be happy. After all, car manufacturers spend many years before releasing a new car, on testing and safeguarding their vehicles so that they are safe for the public to drive.

Any problems with a car model are usually picked up during the product development process and rectified before the car is released. Unfortunately once in a while, car manufacturers notice that a sufficient number of motorists are reporting a similar complaint about their new car. This could be only a minor problem but in some cases unfortunately they can make cars incredible dangerous in the right conditions.

This was the case recently in America when a Lexus crashed because the acceleration pedal was stuck to the floor leaving the driver unable to stop. In these circumstances and similar, vehicle manufacturers will often initiate a recall of the affected vehicles before accidents happen and the company generate too much negative publicity. Obviously news stories like this are likely to cause panic if you own a similar vehicle but there are steps you should take if your vehicle has been announced as requiring a recall or repairs.

First of all dont go rushing down to your local dealer to demand your car be replaced, firstly you should check with the details of the recall. The details will usually be published on the manufacturers website or in a letter to you directly if you bought the car from brand new. Check the details as your car may not be affected; recalls tend to affect batches of vehicles so it could be the case that a number of cars from one factory or time frame are affected. Check these details and enquire at your manufacturers customer service if you have any questions.

If your car is affected then it is safest not to drive the car unless you are told it is safe enough to do so and even then you should really only drive it to a repairs centre or showroom for repairs or replacing. Its important not to panic when a recall happens and quite often the manufacturer will make all arrangements which can include collecting your car.

Make sure when you buy any new car that you check all of the relevant safety information before buying. Once youve found a safe and reliable car then you could try looking into the various car finance options available such as car credit, if required, to help to buy the car you want.
