It is quite usual to see houses with a garage, either attached to the house itself, with a door giving access to the garage from the house, or free standing, being a separate building apart from the house. The truth be told, have you ever wondered how many of these garages are actually used to house vehicles, as they are supposed to, and how many are used for storage, as overflows from the main living area? I do not know the answer to that, but I could guess a large percentage are used for storage space alone.
Just a quick poll of my friends led me to this conclusion. Our garage quickly filled up when we moved into this house, simply because we brought more furniture here than we had room for, and we were reluctant to part with any of it. Hence, the car has to be parked outside in the open.
I don't know about you, but I am happier when I know my car, one of my prize possessions, which is often quite an expensive item, can be safely locked away. It is not unheard of in this country, for cars to be stolen from the owners drives. So why tempt thieves into trying to steal your car?
For this and other reasons, I decided to invest in some simple carport plans. I know a carport looks a fairly simple construction, but believe me, there is more to it than meets the eye. The structure needs to be strong enough to withstand gusty winds, for example, and no matter where you live, most people experience strong winds at some time in a typical years weather. A carport does not have doors, so it is prone to wind damage.
A lightly built carport might take off into space if it is not built properly. I was not sure if I had the necessary woodworking skills to build one of these myself, and I was torn between paying to have one built for me, or build my own. Though it is reassuring to know you can obtain simple carport plans, if you want to go the do it yourself route.
Not only is it important to use the right materials, and ensure everything is properly secured down, because of the wind problem, but you also need to read up on the local building regulations. You will almost certainly need permission to build one of these.
I would finish by saying that if you have made up your mind to have a carport, have one made or build one yourself which is of a good, solid construction. By doing that, you can be more confident that it will be less vulnerable to storm damage.
