Rome is known as the eternal city' and is the capital of the Lazio region as well as the country of Italy.
According to mythology Rome was founded by the twins Romulus and Remus who were raised by wolves.

Some of the most spectacular remains of the Roman Empire, the Renaissance and Medieval times can be found in Rome. Rome really blossomed during the 15th century in a renaissance that saw the popes spend vast amounts of money on fine buildings such as the Sistine Chapel and St Peter's Basilica.

It is also the founding city of the Catholic religion even though the Vatican City is considered an independent state within Italy. Amazingly the Vatican alone contains more art works and cultural treasures than can be found in most cities around the world.
